This year brought its share of devastating weather disasters super-sized by climate change. They included the Pakistan floods ($30B), Hurricane Ian (over $100B), summer heatwaves and drought across the U.S. and Europe ($20B), and even the recent extreme cold this past week (this Global Warming episode explains how a rapidly warming Arctic exacerbates cold air outbreaks).
But there is also much to celebrate, including the adoption of landmark climate legislation in the United States and Australia, the creation of a new biodiversity treaty at COP15 in Montreal, and the fact that, according to the International Energy Agency, renewable energy will represent the majority of power generation globally by 2025!
The tools to end the climate crisis are available to us—we just need to harness them at scale. That’s why, heading into 2023, I wanted to bring you good climate news from around the world.
